Bengals RB Joe Mixon tests positive for COVID-19

Heading into Week 18 action against the Cleveland Browns, the Cincinnati Bengals are coming off clinching their first AFC North division title in six years.

However, the franchise will be a bit shorthanded without two of their biggest offensive weapons, with running back Joe Mixon out due to testing positive for COVID-19 and quarterback Joe Burrow because of a knee issue, according to ESPN.

Bengals running back Joe Mixon tested positive for COVID-19 and will not play in Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns, league sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

It wraps up an impressive 2021 campaign for Mixon. He ranks second with 1,205 rushing yards and third with 13 rushing touchdowns. He will play a pivotal part of the puzzle for the Bengals’ playoff run. Mixon has brought tremendous stability to the offense.

He’s become the team’s workhorse option in the backfield. If he doesn’t suffer any lingering effects from the illness, he should be in line to play in the wildcard round of the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Burrow’s absence from the season finale game is due to precautionary reasons. The team doesn’t want him to head into the playoffs more hurt than he already is.

The second-year quarterback has taken significant leaps forward as he’s proven to be one of the game’s top young players. Burrow is tied for fifth with 4,611 passing yards and tied for sixth with 34 touchdown passes. As well as that, he holds a 108.3 passer rating.

He’s coming off back-to-back monstrous performances with more than 440 passing yards, and four touchdown passes in each contest.
