Broncos sign former Chargers running back Melvin Gordon

NFL free agency is in full swing with a lot of movement around the league this week. Although Tom Brady’s decision to leave the New England Patriots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has been the top story, plenty of other moves have made an impact like Melvin Gordon heading to the division rival Denver Broncos after his stint with the Los Angeles Chargers.

According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Gordon has agreed to a short-term deal with the Broncos to join forces with Phillip Lindsay in the backfield in the Mile High City.

PFT has learned, via a league source, that running back Melvin Gordon has agreed to a two-year deal with his former AFC West rivals. Gordon and Harris each wore No. 25 for their former clubs, should anyone be in the market for more symmetry.

Gordon had a shaky relationship with the Chargers after holding out for a new contract this past season. Los Angeles wasn’t budging with Gordon demanding a new deal and as a result, the star running back ended his holdout without a new contract, which didn’t help his case moving forward.

Despite not getting a new deal with the Chargers, the Broncos were more than willing to bolster their backfield with the addition of the 26-year-old. Gordon is a two-time Pro Bowler and a player still with a lot of upside heading to the second team he’s played with in the NFL.

In five seasons with the Chargers, the Broncos newcomer rushed for 4,240 yards and 36 touchdowns on 1,059 carries. Gordon also made an impact as a receiver catching 224 passes for 1,873 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns during that time.
