Browns Coach Makes Feelings Clear About Deshaun Watson After Week 1 Loss

Following the lopsided Week 1 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, questions arose about Deshaun Watson’s status as the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback moving forward this season.

The former Pro Bowler put together a less-than-stellar outing, completing 16-of-22 passes for 205 yards with a touchdown, an interception, and rushing for 38 yards.

Despite the growing outside noise, head coach Todd Monken said that the Browns will stick with Watson as the starter.

He took a step further by stating that the film showcased that should remain the case for Week 2 action on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“It’s only been two weeks he’s gotten all the reps. And there were some really good things on film,” Monken said via ESPN. “Some things that you can build on, and there were some others that operationally we got to get better at. …

“I did think that when he had time, when he understood the concepts, he didn’t play tentative, that he let it rip. … I’d like to see how we could build on that. I liked his week of practice last week, and I think he’s only going to continue to get better.”

Monken may remain fairly confident that Watson can lead the team to success, but he has yet to show the game-changing ability that once made him one of the league’s most dynamic quarterbacks.
