Browns hope to resolve Baker Mayfield situation ‘soon’

Since the Cleveland Browns acquired Deshaun Watson, the clock is ticking on the tenure of Baker Mayfield.

Baker Mayfield is no longer the future in Cleveland, making his departure an imminent result. As the Browns look to find a resolution, head coach Kevin Stefanski voiced that he is hopeful the matter can reach a resolution soon.

“I think everyone understands the situation, and we’re hoping that it is resolved soon,” Stefanski said via Kevin Seifert of ESPN.

The Browns could find some difficulty moving Mayfield due to the lack of significant interest in him. The 26-year-old previously wanted a trade to the Indianapolis Colts, but the franchise chose to trade for Matt Ryan.

Meanwhile, several other teams that had quarterback questions addressed their respective situations. The Atlanta Falcons signed Marcus Mariota to a two-year deal. The Denver Broncos traded for Russell Wilson, while the Seattle Seahawks look primed to give Drew Lock a shot at starting.

The New Orleans Saints brought back Jameis Winston on a two-year despite him recovering from a torn ACL. All that leaves Mayfield to face the stark reality that he may have to take a backup spot.

He may also have to play out the fifth-year option of his rookie deal, making roughly $18.9 million. Wherever he lands, he will have to first prove he’s worth a lucrative new deal that would pay him anywhere near the top-paid quarterbacks.

Time will tell where Mayfield lands, but it’s becoming quite clear that it won’t be in the prosperous situation he hoped.
