Browns QB Baker Mayfield is out for Week 7; Case Keenum to start

The Cleveland Browns have stumbled from their strong start to the season, holding a 3-1 record.

Since then, the Browns have dropped back-to-back games as injuries have continued to pile up. It’s featured quarterback Baker Mayfield suffering a partially torn labrum and dislocated shoulder twice.

In the postgame media session after Sunday’s loss, he wore a sling that raised further questions concerning his health. The Oklahoma product voiced that he wants to play on Thursday night against the Denver Broncos, dictating his status for the contest.

“Only I know how my body feels,” Mayfield said Tuesday, via ESPN. “If anyone questions whether I am hindering the team and going out there injured, that’s just not right. It’s my decision. I get to say whether I am able to play or not, and that’s just how it is.”

The Browns are hoping that Mayfield can avoid season-ending surgery, which will require him to play through the ailment. It will come down to his pain threshold as he’s managed to work through the injury.

However, it will lead to backup Case Keenum making his first start since the 2019 season with the Washington Football Team. Keenum holds plenty of experience as he led the Minnesota Vikings to the playoffs in the 2017 season.

“I feel very ready,” Keenum said. “I’ve been ready. You don’t have to get ready if you stay ready.”

The Browns will lean on the veteran to provide stability under center as they will play Thursday’s game without star running backs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt.
