Browns QB Baker Mayfield tries to clear the air about Giants rookie Daniel Jones

Cleveland Browns second-year quarterback Baker Mayfield has continued to find himself at the center of media attention once again.

This time around, it has to do with his comments discussing New York Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones. Mayfield was critical of him in his recent interview with GQ magazine. In the interview, he voiced his surprise with the team’s selection. With all that in mind, Mayfield has fired back at the perception that his comments have left and voiced that he has reached out to Jones personally, according to Jake Trotter of ESPN.

“It seemed very disrespectful, and I can understand that,” Mayfield said. “But what people didn’t realize, the conversation entailed of me saying I was surprised I was drafted No. 1 overall, and then me going on a rant after that about QB evaluation and the frustration from the college recruiting process.

“And so it had nothing to do with Daniel specifically about the winning and stuff.”

Mayfield said that Jones was “very nice” and “cordial” and told Mayfield, “no worries, man,” after he reached out via text message.

Things have quickly been smoothed over with Jones. However, it does put Mayfield in the spotlight once again for something off the field. It has quickly become clear that he will continue to speak his mind on any matter if he feels strongly enough about it.

This was something that could have quickly cooled over, but given the increased media attention combined with Mayfield’s willingness to expand on topics has led to this situation boiling over. It is certainly something that the Browns would like for their young quarterback to learn and grow from moving forward.

All of this may create extra attention around the Browns, but it will be their play on the field that will dictate how things unfold. Mayfield will be at the forefront of it all as the centerpiece of the offense.
