Cardinals HC Kliff Kingsbury ‘praying’ Kyler Murray extension done by training camp

Since the end of the 2021 season, the Arizona Cardinals have been stuck amid a contract dilemma with star quarterback Kyler Murray.

The two sides have yet to work toward a resolution. Murray desires a lucrative long-term deal despite still having two years left in his rookie contract.

The Pro Bowler is set to make $29.7 million for his fifth-year option in the 2023 campaign. However, the number of quarterbacks around the league receiving new contracts has pushed up that timeline.

Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury voiced this week that he’s hoping the situation is resolved before the team meets for mandatory training camp next month.

“I’m praying before training camp,” Kingsbury said Tuesday after the first day of Arizona’s minicamp via ESPN.

Over the last year, several notable quarterbacks have garnered long-term extensions. After Patrick Mahomes hammered out his 10-year extension worth $450 million, the likes of Josh Allen, Deshaun Watson, Dak Prescott, and Matthew Stafford all inked multi-year deals.

The only other notable quarterback sitting without a new deal is Lamar Jackson. Although, he appears to be comfortable letting that conversation bleed over into next offseason.

Murray has been a key component in helping push the Cardinals toward playoff contention. However, the team has yet to take the next step to vie for a Super Bowl.

Arizona is fully committed to Murray being the long-term solution under center, but there isn’t clarity when his next deal will come to fruition. Time will tell when he will have the contract he desires.
