Cardinals sign tight end Zach Ertz to three-year deal

The Arizona Cardinals headed into the offseason with several roster decisions to make.

According to ESPN, the Cardinals resolved one of the prominent situations by inking former Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz to a three-year deal worth $31.65 million with $17.5 million guaranteed.

After Arizona acquired Ertz last season, he recorded 56 receptions for 574 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The 31-year-old quickly became one of Kyler Murray’s favorite passing game targets, especially after DeAndre Hopkins’ injury.

Ertz’s return is significant after wide receiver Christian Kirk signed a four-year deal worth up to $84 million with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Kirk played a pivotal spot in the offense as the second passing game option after Hopkins.

The Cardinals will lean on Ertz to play a massive part in the offensive game plan. The hope is that he recaptures his Pro Bowl form that he saw him be a key piece in the Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl run in 2018.

Arizona was busy on the first day of free agency by inking deals to retain several key players. The team inked running back James Conner to a three-year, $21 million deal worth up to $25.5 million.

The team also re-signed backup Colt McCoy to a two-year contract. Meanwhile, it worked out deals with defensive lineman Michael Dogbe and linebacker Dennis Gardeck.

The Cardinals still have to work out the contract discussions with Murray. He is looking for an extension that will make him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks. He’s currently in the fourth year of his rookie contract that holds a $29.7 million team option for the 2023 season.
