Cardinals uncertain whether Kyler Murray will play in Week 8

As the Arizona Cardinals move through the 2023 campaign, star quarterback Kyler Murray’s health has remained a central focus.

The Murray situation took a significant step forward as a result of his return from the physically unable to perform list on Oct. 18. The move gives the Cardinals until Nov. 8 to decide whether to activate him to the 53-man roster.

In the days ahead of Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, Murray doesn’t hold an injury designation. As well as that, head coach Johnathan Gannon didn’t preclude the possibility that the 26-year-old could be activated.

“We’ll see,” Gannon said when asked if Murray would be active on game day via ESPN.

The Cardinals are playing the matter close to the vest, leaving open speculation likely to avoid the Ravens properly preparing for the matchup. Beyond that, Arizona may be playing the situation day by day given the financial gravity of Murray’s possible return.

The Cardinals are likely hesitant due to the star quarterback’s $29.9 million in 2025 salary becoming fully guaranteed if he can’t pass a physical before next March.

Although that is a bit of a way away, the Cardinals don’t appear to be entirely on board with Murray as the long-term future. Arizona has struggled to achieve sustained success with him under center.

Murray inked a five-year extension in July 2022 that puts him under contract through the 2028 campaign. What the Cardinals do with his availability this season will indicate their long-term plans with him.
