Chargers All-Pro Derwin James ‘out indefinitely’ with foot injury

It hasn’t been the cleanest run through training camp and the preseason for the Los Angeles Chargers.

Things have taken yet another disappointing turn as star safety Derwin James has suffered a foot injury that has sidelined him indefinitely, according to Eric D. Williams of ESPN.

Los Angeles Chargers All-Pro safety Derwin James suffered a foot injury Thursday and will be out indefinitely, the team announced Friday.

James was diagnosed with a stress fracture of the fifth metatarsal of his right foot, according to the team, and will continue to be evaluated. The Chargers have not determined a course of treatment.

This is a significant blow to the Chargers defense as he has not only quickly emerged as a centerpiece in the secondary but is also one of the most important pieces for the entire unit on that side of the ball. In his first year in the league, James proved to be one of the top safeties in the NFL behind his ability to impact the game in all facets.

This helped him earn both a Pro Bowl selection and an All-Pro selection after notching a team-best 105 tackles along with 3.5 sacks, three interceptions, and 15 pass deflections. Although there is no timetable for his return, there are also around three more weeks until the start of the regular season.

This only adds to what has been a tough last few days for the Chargers that has also seen star wide receiver Keenan Allen suffer an ankle injury that required surgery and will keep him out of the lineup for the rest of the preseason.
