Chargers hire Kellen Moore as new offensive coordinator

The Los Angeles Chargers wasted little time in finding their next offensive coordinator after hiring Kellen Moore.

Shortly after Moore’s unexpected departure from the Dallas Cowboys, the Chargers quickly signed him to take the same position. Los Angeles is hoping the addition can elevate the offense to another level after falling embarrassingly short in the wildcard round to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Moore had tremendous success with the Cowboys, who ranked second in points (27.7) and yards per game (391), and fourth in third-down conversions (44%) in his four-year tenure. The Chargers have taken the step to become a consistent playoff factor. However, the organization desires to move into Super Bowl contention.

Moore will have the opportunity to work with a talented group led by quarterback Justin Herbert, skilled wideouts Keenan Allen and Mike Williams along with running back Austin Ekeler. The Chargers have the pieces in place to be among the most productive offenses in the league.

The biggest hurdle the franchise has had to overcome is the injury bug that plagued their wide receivers. Allen and Williams missed time in 2022, which put more pressure on Herbert to lead the charge.

The Chargers ranked 10th in scoring (22.4) and 30th in rushing (89.6) last season. Moore may look to bring more of an emphasis on the running game, which allowed Cowboys running back Tony Pollard to have his breakout campaign.

Beyond that, the pressure is on the Chargers to take next the step forward as head coach Brandon Staley heads toward a make-or-beak 2023 season.
