Chargers QB Justin Herbert jokingly says ‘it’s pretty cool’ Patrick Mahomes knows him
Last month, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes stirred the pot a bit after some intriguing comments at a celebrity golf event. A fan yelled at Mahomes to watch out for Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert to which he responded, “I’ll see it when I believe it.”
The Chiefs star quarterback later backtracked his comments as trash talk. However, it was only a matter of time before the remarks came back around to Herbert.
The Oregon product chose to take the high road by voicing he’s honored that Mahomes knows who he is. (h/t Pro Football Talk)
“I think it’s pretty cool that Patrick Mahomes knows who I am,” Herbert said. “I’m cool with it. I have such great respect for what he’s been able to do, and I’ve watched him so much.”
Herbert likely knew that Mahomes didn’t spew his comments with any ill will, but more so fueled by his confidence the Chiefs lead the AFC West. In his first three years as the starter, he’s led Kansas City to a division title in each campaign.
If anything, the remarks provide Herbert with additional motivation to dethrone Mahomes and the Chiefs. Last season, he nearly led Los Angeles past Kansas City in each of its two regular-season meetings.
Herbert holds the opportunity to take another significant step forward after an impressive rookie campaign. He’s quickly proven to be a promising trajectory toward NFL stardom as a franchise cornerstone.
Beyond all that, the opportunity is there for Herbert to get the best of Mahomes in 2021.
