Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes could become the NFL’s first $200 million player
The Kansas City Chiefs parted ways with veteran quarterback Alex Smith before the 2018 campaign due to their confidence in Patrick Mahomes being their next franchise player. It was a questionable move at the time, but now it seems like a no-brainer with the young quarterback quickly emerging as one of the league’s elite players.
With Mahomes already the team’s franchise player and having led the Kansas City to their first AFC Championship Game, the Chiefs could make the breakout star a very rich man in the near future. Mahomes could become the NFL’s first $200 million player, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
The Chiefs are expected to extend Mahomes’ contract after next season, the first time the MVP candidate is eligible for an extension, and he could land the NFL’s first $200 million contract, league sources told ESPN.
In what was basically his rookie season, Mahomes threw for 50 touchdowns and turned the Chiefs into the best offense in the NFL. The young quarterback put on a show on a weekly basis with his play under center for Kansas City and appears to have a very bright future ahead.
Along with 50 passing touchdowns, Mahomes threw for 5,097 yards and 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 270 yards and two touchdowns leading his team to the top seed in the AFC and 12-4 record.
Although it does seem premature that the Chiefs would be considering Mahomes for such a historic contract, the young gunslinger may very well be the real deal and possibly a player that could be named NFL MVP this year.
