Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes wins a second NFL MVP award

Days before Super Bowl 57, the NFL announced that Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes secured his second regular-season MVP award.

Mahomes put together another highly impressive campaign. He led the league with 5,250 passing yards, 41 touchdown passes, and 77.5 total QBR. Beyond that, he led the Chiefs to the top seed in the AFC behind a 14-3 record.

“I would never be standing here today without you all,” Mahomes said of winning the award via ESPN. “Every day, giving everything we have together to go for the ultimate goal: the Super Bowl. Let’s continue to go for that dream this weekend.”

The 27-year-old received 48 out of the 50 first-place votes with the other two going to Philadelphia Eagles star quarterback Jalen Hurts. The race for the prestigious award could have been a bit closer had Hurts not suffered a shoulder injury that limited his availability over the last month of the regular season.

Nonetheless, Mahomes’ performance over the 2022 campaign showcased that he earned the honor. Despite Pro Bowl wide receiver Tyreek Hill departing in the offseason, he guided the Chiefs to remain one of the league’s most productive offenses.

Mahomes holds the opportunity to become the first quarterback since Kurt Warner to win both the regular-season MVP award, Super Bowl, and Super Bowl MVP. Kansas City holds a daunting task ahead against Philadelphia, who possess the NFL’s best pass rush along with a formidable offense led by Hurts.

All that sets the table for what should be a thrilling Super Bowl matchup.
