Chiefs superstar Travis Kelce admits to needing to play better

Through the first two games of the 2024 season, Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce is off to a subpar start in terms of his production.

Kelce has largely been a non-factor in the Chiefs’ passing game, with only four catches for 39 receiving yards and no touchdowns. The 35-year-old has shouldered that blame for his quiet start to the season.

“I put that on me,” Kelce said on the weekly “New Heights” podcast he co-hosts with brother Jason via ESPN. “I didn’t play my best, and it spreads if you don’t fix it and I’ve got to get that thing fixed.”

Kelce’s production likely won’t stay well below his standard as the Chiefs work him more intently into the passing game. He remains star quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ most dependable option, and the two share an extremely cohesive connection that can take just one game to get him back on track.

Kelce is coming off a 2023 season in which he snapped a streak of seven consecutive seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards. He missed two games last year while dealing with nagging injuries that significantly contributed to his failure to reach that mark.

Although he is undoubtedly getting older, he can still be a highly impactful passing game threat. It’s a matter of him getting those opportunities to showcase his talent.

He will have the chance to get his 2024 season back on track in Week 3 on the road against the Atlanta Falcons.
