Colts bench Anthony Richardson in favor of Joe Flacco
Ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts knew they had an opportunity to potentially bring in a franchise quarterback, with a few different players coming out of the college game looking like finished products with a huge upside.
The consensus was that Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Anthony Richardson and Will Levis were the four stud quarterbacks in that draft class, and after a year, it appears that only one will stand the test of time while being successful on the NFL level. Stroud has been remarkable for the Houston Texans, while every other quarterback mentioned has been a disappointment.

Richardson is the latest young quarterback to be sent to the bench by his team, with the Colts coaching staff believing they’ve got a better chance of winning moving forward with 39-year-old Joe Flacco leading the way rather than the second-year pro out of Florida, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler.
The Indianapolis Colts are benching Anthony Richardson and turning to Joe Flacco as their starting quarterback, sources told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Adam Schefter.
With the Colts sending Richardson to the bench, people are starting to wonder if he’s done in Indianapolis, but the team seems to be maintaining the stance that isn’t the case via ESPN.
One team source characterized the benching as a “growth opportunity” and also insisted that the Colts “are not quitting on Anthony.”
“That will be the story, but that is not the case,” the source told ESPN.
Even though the Colts brass isn’t giving up on Richardson publicly, it’ll be interesting to see what happens in Indianapolis moving forward and what the team intends to do once the NFL offseason rolls around.
