Colts QB Anthony Richardson’s season is over

The Indianapolis Colts will head into the season finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars without second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson due to ongoing back spasms.

The Florida product voiced that he has dealt with lingering severe pain issues that started on Christmas Eve night. Richardson attempted to get his body ready to play, but he hasn’t made enough progress to get back on the field for Week 18 action.

“Just didn’t make enough progress this week,” head coach Shane Steichen said via ESPN.

It’s been nothing short of a frustrating 2024 season for Richardson as he struggled to play with consistency while dealing with injuries. The Colts hoped that he would make a significant jump in his performance in his second campaign, instead, he’s failed to show promising progress.

This has led to conversations about his character as he subbed himself out of the game against the Houston Texans in Week 8 due to being tired.

All that is coupled with his inability to stay on the field due to health issues. He missed 13 games last year due to season-ending shoulder surgery, and he will have been sidelined for four games this season while being a healthy scratch for two games due to being benched.

Serious questions now lie concerning his long-term status with the team that could see the Colts head in another direction under center in 2025. Richardson still has two more years left in his four-year, $33.9 million rookie contract that holds a fifth-year team option in 2027.
