Cowboys DE Aldon Smith vows to be a better man

It has been nothing short of a bumpy road for defensive end, Aldon Smith, who has tried to maintain an NFL career. Smith recently received another chance to get back into the league as the Dallas Cowboys took a chance on him this offseason with a one-year deal.

That was take up a notch after the NFL announced this week that he was going to get a conditional reinstatement. In response to that, Smith voiced his appreciation for getting the chance to continue his career. (H/T ESPN)

“I think the overall emotion is I’m grateful. I’m really grateful,” Smith said. “… I came a long way. For me to have the opportunity to get back and do something that I love, something that I enjoyed — just to have that opportunity again means a lot. I was able to defeat some big, big obstacles in my life.”

The veteran defensive end went through a lot in his life over the last few years that had put him a dangerous path. Beyond his NFL career nearly ending due to his poor decision-making, it also put his life away from the sport into a troublesome path.

Smith will have a chance to prove he can maintain himself away from his craft so that he can potentially play beyond the 2020 season. He has the opportunity to firmly secure a significant role along the Cowboys’ defensive line that needs more pass-rushing presence after the departure of Robert Quinn in free agency. Before his suspension, Smith had 47.5 sacks in 59 games.
