Cowboys owner Jerry Jones shares an update on Dak Prescott’s contract

The No. 1 lingering topic of discussion around the Dallas Cowboys heading into the offseason has been star quarterback Dak Prescott’s contract situation. Prescott is currently without a new deal from the Cowboys, which has him headed towards free agency.

The chatter between both sides has been quite mum with them meeting on Wednesday for the first time since last September to discuss a new contract. With that in mind, team owner Jerry Jones voiced on Thursday that any deal with Prescott will have to fit in their parameters. (H/T Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk)

“Don’t make anything of that, one way or another,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Thursday, via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “That’s not what counts. [What counts is] when you decide it’s time to make it work.”

Jones added that he was not demeaning the meeting “but what counts is when it looks like it fits.”

The lack of movement between both sides isn’t surprising given that they haven’t truly dived into discussions. That should come in the next couple of weeks with the team hoping to avoid placing the franchise tag on Prescott.

There is a mutual interest, but that hasn’t equated to this seeing them working out a new long-term deal. It will remain a lingering topic of discussion around the Cowboys until a contract is worked out. At the same time, if things push Dallas to use the franchise tag on Prescott, then things could head into another route.
