Cowboys star Micah Parsons has sights set on NFL sack record

Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker Micah Parsons burst onto the scene as one of the league’s top defenders in his rookie campaign.

Parsons put forth an impressive first year that earned the rookie Defensive Player of the Year award. The Pro Bowler is already setting the bar high for his second season. So high that he’s hoping to break the single-season all-time sack record.

“Yeah, 15’s like the minimum. Fifteen is what I want to hit,” Parsons told Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports. “But definitely 23 is that goal, to break the record.”

Parsons has shown elite ability as a pass rusher. Last season he helped give the Cowboys one of the league’s best one-two punches alongside DeMarcus Lawrence.

He finished second in the voting for the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award after recording 13.0 sacks, 30 quarterback hits, and 20 tackles for loss.

Parsons’ lofty goal saw reigning defensive player of the year T.J. Watt tie Hall of Famer’s all-time single-season mark with 22.5 sacks. It’s certainly a difficult achievement, but the addition of a 17th regular-season game makes reaching that historic feat more plausible.

Parson has already quickly elevated himself to one of the game’s best defensive talents. The 23-year-old earned a litany of notable honors in his first year, such as a Pro Bowl nod and an All-Pro First-Team selection.

He’s a dynamic player with his pass-rushing ability that could see him become a constant in the Defensive Player of the Year conversation for many years to come.
