Eagles sign star QB Jalen Hurts to massive contract extension

Months after leading the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl, star quarterback Jalen Hurts landed a huge payday.

The Eagles and Hurts reportedly agreed to a five-year, $255 million extension that includes $179.3 million guaranteed. Although Deshaun Watson still holds the NFL record with $230 million guaranteed, Hurts now takes over as the highest-paid quarterback annually at $51 million per season ahead of Aaron Rodgers’ $50.3 million.

The new deal includes a no-trade clause, which is the first time that is included in a contract in team history. Hurts entered the 2022 season with plenty of questions surrounding his long-term future with the Eagles.

He quickly silenced that doubt by leading Philadelphia to the top playoff seed in the NFC. He finished the regular season as an MVP candidate behind 3,701 passing yards. As well as that, Hurts had 22 touchdown passes and 760 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns.

His 43 total touchdowns broke Donovan McNabb’s franchise record for most ever in a single season. His stellar campaign earned him a Pro Bowl selection and a Second-Team All-Pro nod.

Hurts followed that by guiding the team to the Super Bowl, where he put forth an impressive performance with 374 total yards and four touchdowns in the 38-35 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Eagles can move forward with Hurts locked into a long-term deal for the foreseeable future through the 2028 season.

Philadelphia will enter the 2023 campaign as one of the Super Bowl favorites, which will largely depend on their star quarterback leading the charge.
