Emmitt Smith Shares Bold Take on Derrick Henry’s Chase for NFL History
Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith has held the all-time rushing yard record for more than two decades, but he’s unsure how much longer that mark will be his.
The Dallas Cowboys legend said he believes Baltimore Ravens star running back Derrick Henry could vie for that illustrious career record.
“Oh yeah, I think it’s possible,” Smith told DraftKings via ESPN. “Derrick Henry is a bigger back. He takes great care of his body. He’s in great shape.”
Henry has continued to march his way up the all-time rushing yard list, currently sitting at 10th with 13,162 yards. He trails Smith by 5,193 yards, which could put him in striking distance if he continues to perform at the high level that he’s maintained throughout much of his career.
If Henry were to play four more seasons, he would need to average 1,300 yards to surpass Smith to secure the all-time record.
Since joining the Ravens in 2024, Henry hasn’t shown any decline in his play as he’s notched an NFL-best 3,660 rushing yards and is averaging 104.6 rushing yards per game. This includes him notching 1,961 rushing yards in 2024 and following that up with 1,595 rushing yards last season.
Henry continued that torrid pace in the season opener, a 41-23 win over the Indianapolis Colts, by posting 144 rushing yards on 24 carries with three touchdowns.

The Ravens will continue to feature him heavily in the offense, especially given his production remains at an elite level at age 32. That will give him ample opportunity to continue to inch closer to Smith for the all-time mark.
Ultimately, time will tell if Henry’s health and performance will hold up.
