Former Raiders QB Derek Carr agrees to four-year deal with Saints

Nearly two weeks before the start of free agency, Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Carr has found a new home for the 2023 season and likely beyond that. Derek Carr has reportedly agreed to a four-year deal with the New Orleans Saints that could potentially be worth up to $150 million with $100 million guaranteed. He will earn $60 million guaranteed at signing and another $10 million once he begins the third year of his new deal.

The 31-year-old met with the Saints along with a few other teams before joining the franchise. He spent a few days going over his options, which included the New York Jets.

Carr chose to waive his no-trade clause in his contract with the Las Vegas Raiders when discussing a possible move to the Saints. That decision led to the Raiders to unsurprisingly cut him to avoid paying him $40 million for the 2023 season.

He is coming off posting 3,522 passing yards, 24 touchdown passes, and 14 interceptions, along with career lows with a 60.8% completion percentage and an 86.3 passer rating. The Saints are hoping the change of scenery will result in him getting back on track to lead the franchise back to the playoffs after finishing with a 7-10 record last season.

Carr’s arrival likely could mean that New Orleans will part ways with Jameis Winston, who served as the primary starter over the last two seasons. There is also uncertainty around star wide receiver Mike Thomas’ future, especially after he restructured his contract.
