Giants bench Daniel Jones in favor of Tommy DeVito

After falling to a fifth straight loss, the New York Giants finally decided to shake things up under center by demoting longtime starter Daniel Jones in favor of Tommy DeVito.

Jones will assume the third-string spot behind DeVito and Drew Lock moving forward.

“I got a lot of respect for Daniel, I’ve said that before,” head coach Brian Daboll said via ESPN. “Those conversations will remain private. Certainly you’re not going to be happy about [being benched] as a competitor, and I respect that.”

Jones has struggled to lead the Giants offense forward this season, ranking last in the league with 15.2 points per game and 26th in passing yards. His lack of stable production has seen him fail to throw a touchdown pass in six of the first 10 games played.

Jones is coming off another porous performance where he threw two for 190 passing yards with two interceptions, no touchdown passes, and held a 50.2 passer rating.

Although the playoffs are clearly out of the picture for the Giants, a change at quarterback was forthcoming due to Jones’ play. Beyond that, it signals that New York is beginning the process of moving on from the quarterback that it signed to a four-year, $160 million deal two years ago.

In the meantime, the Giants will move forward with DeVito under center starting with a matchup at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“After evaluating a bunch of things and looking at a lot of tape and being around Tommy last year where he created a little bit of a spark for us, that’s the reasonwhy we’re going with Tommy,” Daboll said.
