Giants GM admits it’s ‘an important year’ for QB Daniel Jones

The New York Giants are heading into the 2021 NFL season with plenty of optimism.

Much of which lies on quarterback Daniel Jones’ shoulders as the team hopes he can take the next leap forward. General manager Dave Gettleman ramped up the pressure by voicing it’s an “important” year for the Duke product.

“This is an important year for Daniel and an important year for us,” the Giants’ general manager said on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Tuesday via the New York Post. “What can I tell you? I’m stating the obvious.”

Jones didn’t need Gettleman’s comments to understand the importance of the upcoming campaign. The 24-year-old is coming off a rough campaign, where he threw for 2,943 yards with 11 touchdowns to 10 interceptions while committing eight fumbles and held an 80.4 passer rating.

He took a significant step back as his production dipped from his rookie campaign while he struggled to find any rhythm. If he has another tough go-around, it’s hard to imagine the Giants move forward comfortably with him as the clear-cut starter.

If Jones wants to erase any doubt, he will need to step up with strong production while leading the Giants to success. New York will give him the reins to the offense, but it lies on his shoulders to make the most out of the opportunity.

If not, the front office may elect to bring another quarterback in to replace him potentially. The pressure is on him to prove he can be the long-term solution under center in New York.
