Giants’ J.J. McCarthy Trade Adds Intrigue After John Harbaugh’s QB Declaration
The New York Giants added to their quarterback room on Monday by trading a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for J.J. McCarthy.
The Michigan product had steadily fallen out of the mix in Minnesota and slipped down the depth chart to third string behind Carson Wentz and starter Kyler Murray.
The season-ending injury to second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart put the Giants in need of depth at the position, making a trade for McCarthy a feasible move.
After New York grabbed a win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, head coach John Harbaugh voiced that Jameis Winston will be the starter moving forward.
“Jameis will be the starter for as long as I can see into the future,” Harbaugh said. “But I don’t know. Nobody knows. What I do know is that we’re going to be playing this game against the Cardinals on Sunday and Jameis will be our starter for sure and he’s going to play a winning football game.”
The Giants’ decision to trade for McCarthy does at least spark the conversation that he could get an opportunity to start if things don’t pan out as hoped with Winston.

The fresh start elsewhere might be what he needs to get his career on track. He has struggled to find his footing in the NFL; he lost the starting job to Murray in training camp, and an ankle injury sidelined him for the Vikings’ final preseason game.
Things had appeared to hit a wall in Minnesota, which makes the move one that could change the trajectory of his career.
