The Real Reason Jadeveon Clowney Chose to Return to the Texans

Three-time Pro Bowler Jadeveon Clowney has returned to the Houston Texans on a one-year, $5.5 million deal.

Clowney last played for the Texans in 2018, after the organization selected him with the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

The 33-year-old told the Houston Chronicle that it was an easy decision to go back where his NFL career began.

“I feel like I can help the younger guys. I’ve learned how to lead and what it takes to get to a Super Bowl. I feel like I can help this team,” he told the newspaper via ESPN.

In his five seasons with the Texans, he struggled to stay on the field, but he racked up 29.0 sacks while earning all three of his Pro Bowl selections and a Second Team All-Pro nod (2016).

In the seven seasons since his departure from Houston, he has played for six different teams, while the Cleveland Browns were the only NFL stop he had for more than one campaign. He also registered 8.5 sacks or more three times, but never recorded a single double-digit sack season.

Clowney is joining an already stout Texans defense that is heralded as one of the league’s top units. It features a dominant pass rush led by star defensive ends Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter.

The duo combined for 27 sacks last season, with Anderson notching 12 sacks and Hunter 15 sacks. Meanwhile, Clowney is coming off a productive lone campaign with the Dallas Cowboys, where he led the team with 8.5 sacks, including notching three in the regular season finale against the New York Giants.
