Jameis Winston beats out Taysom Hill for Saints’ starting QB job

The Saints are moving into a new era without Drew Brees, and it’s opened the door for Jameis Winston. It’s time for him to make his case as the next franchise cornerstone to lead the team forward. Ahead of his second campaign in New Orleans, Winston voiced that he is looking forward to the opportunity.

“I would love to carry that torch from him,” Winston said earlier this year when he got emotional while talking about how much it meant to him to spend last season as Brees’ backup via ESPN. “I would love to be able to provide the excitement and joy and resilience that he provided for this city.”

Winston is expected to get the first crack as the starting quarterback as the Saints are rolling forward with the former first overall pick. It’s a fresh chance for him to engrain himself with the franchise after a failed stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Winston has outperformed Taysom Hill in the preseason, making the decision an easier choice. In the preseason win over Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday night, he completed 9 of 10 passes for 123 yards and two deep touchdowns to receiver Marquez Callaway.

It’s a small sample size but enough to warrant the confidence from the Saints to move forward with him. Winston will likely have a shorter leash as he has struggled in the past to play with consistency.

New Orleans is more than comfortable giving Hill a shot as he’s earned tremendous confidence from head coach Sean Payton. Time will tell if Winston is the answer with the Saints.
