Jets trade former 2nd-round pick Denzel Mims to Lions

The Detroit Lions added another piece to the puzzle after acquiring veteran wide receiver Denzel Mims from the New York Jets.

The Lions sent a 2025 conditional sixth-round pick in exchange for Mims and a 2025 seventh-round selection. The Jets had informed the 25-year-old that he would be waived if he was not traded.

New York had also already excused him from training camp in order to ease the situation away from the team. Mims now joins a Lions’ team that is on the rise after narrowly missing out on the playoffs.

Detroit has assembled a promising group of young talent that he can become a key offensive piece. Mims has struggled to put together strong production through his first three seasons, totaling 42 receptions for 676 receiving yards and no touchdowns.

The change of scenery could help the former 2020 second-round pick get on the right track. He will vie for playing time behind Amon-Ra St. Brown, Marvin Jones Jr., Jameson Williams, and Josh Reynolds.

The trade for Mims is a low-risking, high-reward move as he could become a key factor while he’s playing on his inexpensive rookie deal. Meanwhile, he could use the situation being in the final year of his contract to put forth a strong campaign to earn a lucrative payday next offseason.

The Lions are on the upswing pushing toward being a legitimate playoff contender. Quarterback Jared Goff has found his groove as the key component after posting 4,438 passing yards and 29 touchdown passes to seven interceptions.
