Jimmy Garoppolo excused from mandatory 49ers minicamp

The San Francisco 49ers have continued to dance around questions concerning quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s future.

The franchise has remained non-committal to his tenure beyond the 2022 season, which marks the final year of his contract. The 49ers further clouded the situation by allowing Garoppolo to be excused from mandatory minicamp, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.

The writing has been on the wall since the 49ers chose to move up in last year’s draft to take Trey Lance. Meanwhile, Garoppolo has handled the situation with much grace, allowing San Francisco to move forward.

However, the 49ers have struggled to find a suitable trade for the veteran quarterback due to his offseason shoulder surgery. Garoppolo is still recovering from the operation, and should be ready to throw in the next few weeks if needed.

San Francisco doesn’t appear to have any urgency to move on from the 30-year-old. The team also isn’t committing to Lance as the starter. Although the expectation is that he will get his opportunity to start in his second campaign.

The 49ers are likely waiting to see if any team will offer a notable trade package. At the same time, the organization appears more than comfortable to move forward with Garoppolo to at least start the 2022 season.

He is a proven asset that has shown he lead a team to consistent success. He’s two years removed from guiding the franchise to a Super Bowl 54 appearance and holds a 31-14 record as the starter in San Francisco.
