Jimmy Garoppolo ‘thrilled’ to be traded to the 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers and new head coach Kyle Shanahan were tired of losing. The storied franchise dropped all eight of their games in the first half of the 2017 NFL season and knew it was time to shake things up.

As a result, the team decided to make a move ahead of the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday by acquiring quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from the New England Patriots in exchange for a 2018 second-round draft pick. The move immediately triggered the release of veteran Brian Hoyer and potentially the start of new era in San Francisco.

Garoppolo was introduced by the team on Tuesday after the deal had been completed and the longtime backup for Tom Brady in New England is ecstatic about his new start as a franchise player with the 49ers, via ESPN’s Nick Wagoner.

“I guess we’ll see what happens, type of thing,” Garoppolo said. “You know, [I’m] thrilled to be here. I mean, just got here this morning. I couldn’t be happier. But you know, we’re just — got to take it week-by-week right now. I’ve got a whole playbook to learn. The terminology, I mean, it’s going to be like learning a different language. I’m looking forward to the challenge and enjoying the process.”

Unfortunately for San Francisco, it appears that even though Garoppolo has passed his physical and is officially a 49er, the team won’t have him under center in Week 9 with the team expected to start C.J. Beathard at quarterback.

Shanahan and company want Garoppolo to get familiar with the playbook before thrusting him into the fire so his debut in a 49ers uniform will have to wait a little longer.
