Jimmy Garoppolo will remain with 49ers for at least one more season

Throughout much of the offseason, there has remained uncertainty around quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s future with the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers have effectively moved forward with second-year quarterback Trey Lance as the starter. All that had led to questions concerning whether Garoppolo would be on the 53-man roster by Week 1.

San Francisco finally brought some much-needed clarity to the matter by restructuring the final year of Garoppolo’s contract. The 30-year-old reportedly agreed to a new base salary of $6.5 million in fully guaranteed money, including $500,00 in roster bonuses and playtime bonuses that could work the contract up to nearly $9 million more earned.

The shift in Garoppolo’s future with the 49ers likely comes due to the lack of significant interest in his services. He has spent much of the offseason recovering from shoulder surgery. Meanwhile his reputation has taken a hit from being considered a quarterback that can lead a team with his arm.

All that guided the situation toward Garoppolo being on the fence about getting cut by the team due to financial reasons. The 49ers will now have the veteran quarterback as a safety net if Lance struggles or gets hurt.

Meanwhile, Garoppolo will have the flexibility to hit free agency next offseason to find his next NFL home. It’s not ideal for him, but it at least gives him stability for the 2022 campaign.

If anything, the pressure lies on Lance to prove that he can become the franchise cornerstone that the organization believes he can be.
