Joe Flacco admits he took his time to decide his NFL future

There has been plenty of movement across the league this offseason. This summer saw many notable quarterbacks find new homes in the NFL. Among those is former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco, who recently signed with the New York Jets. There had been much speculation as to where he could play next. It is a decision that Flacco brought clarity to during an interview SiriusXM NFL Radio. He stated he didn’t exactly know what he was going to do until this month. “I took a while to really think about what I wanted to do,” Flacco said.

Joe Flacco likely had other opportunities to be a backup quarterback with another team, but the timing of his decision led him to the Jets. He has the pedigree to earn a shot at a starting job several other situations, but this move shows that he has embraced that he may have to settle for being a backup.

It also didn’t help that he struggled with the Denver Broncos last year. As a result of his poor form, he was benched for rookie Drew Lock. Flacco will now be in the role of a mentor to Sam Darnold and insurance policy in case he deals with any injuries.

He as put himself in a tough spot for many quarterbacks to deal with at the back end of their career dealing with the reality of being viewed as a backup. Joe Flacco is still an NFL caliber quarterback, but his days as the clear-cut starter could behind if he wants to extend his career beyond the 2020 campaign.
