Joe Mixon’s future with Texans remains uncertain

After missing the entire 2025 season, Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon’s future with the franchise remains uncertain.

Mixon had suffered a foot injury in training camp that he never recovered enough to play. When asked about the situation on Wednesday, general manager Nick Caserio still couldn’t provide clarity on the specifics of the injury, other than calling it a “freak thing.”

“It wasn’t like he was riding a snowmobile or anything like that,” Caserio said via ESPN. “It was more of a medical condition or situation that never … really didn’t improve maybe as much as everybody would have hoped. I’m not trying to evade the question, that’s the reality of the situation. He didn’t jump off a building. He wasn’t cliff diving or anything. He wasn’t doing anything irresponsible. It was just a freak thing.”

Despite Mixon’s absence, the Texans were able to push their way toward the Divisional Round of the playoffs for the third straight year. Houston leaned on rookie Woody Marks and former Pro Bowler Nick Chubb as the primary factors out of the backfield.

Marks led the team with 703 rushing yards while Chubb had 506 rushing yards. However, the Texans struggled mightily to run the ball in their Divisional Round loss to the New England Patriots, totaling just 48 yards.

The question now lies with the Texans having enough faith to keep Mixon for the final year of his three-year, $27 million contract extension that he initially inked after he joined the team following a seven-year stint with the Cincinnati Bengals
