Kirk Cousins unhappy Falcons chose to draft QB Michael Penix Jr.
The first round of the 2024 NFL Draft had a few surprises. However, nothing stood out more than the Atlanta Falcons selecting former Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick.
The move raised eyebrows due to the fact that the Falcons already have Kirk Cousins as their current starter. Cousins recently inked a four-year, $180 million deal in free agency.

Head coach Raheem Morris voiced that Atlanta is keeping Cousins’ reaction private.
“He got called on the clock, obviously because of the sensitive time with the issues of what you got going on,” Morris said via ESPN. “It’s never a right time to talk to a quarterback about those things. And reactions are always going to be private when it comes to those things, unless Kirk decides to tell you some of those things that are whatever they may be. But he’s a competitor, just like us all. And you can always expect those things to go just like you kind of think.”

Regardless of Cousins’ reaction, it is a puzzling move given their quarterback situation before the selection. The franchise is committed to a significant contract with the 35-year-old.
He may be returning from a torn Achilles, but the Falcons are locked into a massive deal with him. The decision to choose a quarterback instead of addressing another area of need on the roster could come back to haunt Atlanta.
