Lions’ Sam LaPorta Receives Major Update Ahead of Training Camp

Detroit Lions star tight end Sam LaPorta cleared another significant hurdle in his recovery as he was cleared fully to participate in training camp.

Last season, he underwent a microdiscectomy to repair a fully herniated disk. The 25-year-old has spent the past several months working his way back to the field, and he should be on a trajectory to be ready to go before the 2026 season.

In nine games last year, he notched 40 catches for 489 receiving yards and three touchdowns. LaPorta has firmly established himself as a key part of the Lions’ passing game as one of Jared Goff’s favorite targets.

Through his first three seasons, he has 186 catches for 2,104 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns in 42 games played. It includes a stellar rookie campaign that saw him earn Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors while posting his best numbers with 86 receptions for 889 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.

LaPorta heads into the 2026 season with plenty on the table as he’s set to become a free agent next March. He will not only have to prove that he’s back to form from his injury but also prove that he can continue to be a huge cog in the Lions’ offensive game plan to garner a lucrative deal next offseason.
