Markus Golden receives ‘rare’ tender from Giants

The New York Giants have been one of the busier teams this offseason with their eyes on push forward in 2020 season.

That has seen them make some notable moves this offseason, which has now included utilizing a rare unrestricted free-agent tender on outside linebacker Markus Golden, according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN.

The New York Giants elected to place a rare unrestricted free-agent tender on outside linebacker Markus Golden, a source told ESPN’s Field Yates.

The use of that tender allows Golden to ink a contract with another franchise, and wouldn’t reward the Giants with a compensatory pick for next year’s draft. However, what helps the Giants in this situation is that if he’s still without a deal beyond July 22, he would only be able to play for the Giants next season.

That puts a significant incentive on Golden to get a new deal done well before that deadline. It’s a tough situation while there hasn’t been any notable traction toward him getting his next contract worked out. Last season, he put forth a solid campaign as he led the team with 13 tackles for loss, 27 quarterback hits, and 10.0 sacks.

The return of Golden would provide the Giants with a much-needed pass-rushing presence. There is a great deal of incentive on both sides to work out a contract before that new deadline. There is still plenty of time before then for Golden to garner his next contract, but the time is now ticking faster on him.
