Mike McCarthy reacts to retaining Cowboys HC job

In the days after the Dallas Cowboys fell disappointingly in the wildcard playoff round to the Green Bay Packers, head coach Mike McCarthy’s future remained in question.

However, team owner Jerry Jones elected to bring back McCarthy for his fifth season. McCarthy confirmed as much that he’s staying at the helm.

“I believe that the direction, the leadership, everything is in place,” McCarthy said via ESPN. “And I’m not very comfortable talking about myself, but I came here to win a championship. I didn’t come here to get another contract or anything other than that. I came to Dallas to win a world championship, and that’s why I’m standing here. Buy into us.”

Although Jones chose to bring back McCarthy, there isn’t any guarantee that he keep his job through the final year of his contract in 2025. The decision to keep him likely comes with the caveat that he must make a deep run in the playoffs toward the Super Bowl next season.

If not, he could be dismissed, especially if it’s another wildcard playoff exit. The Cowboys could have explored other options such as Bill Belichick, Mike Vrabel, or Jim Harbaugh, but chose to instead give McCarthy another shot.

Despite all the chatter around his long-term job status, McCarthy didn’t air any concern regarding the situation.

“I’ll be honest with you: The only thing I worry about is my family,” McCarthy said. “I’m extremely confident in who I am. I can’t say that enough. So I’m confident in what we’ve done here and I have great confidence where we’re going. That’s really how the meeting ended. And not only where we’re going but we’ve got work to do. The job’s not finished yet. And we both know that.”

The pressure is on McCarthy to lead the Cowboys well beyond an NFC East divisional. It’s all on his shoulders to take that next leap that Jones and the fan base desperately want to experience.
