Steelers’ Mike McCarthy Breaks Silence on Heated Aaron Rodgers Sideline Exchange
During the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 27-24 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night, cameras caught a heated exchange between quarterback Aaron Rodgers and head coach Mike McCarthy.
In the first quarter, the broadcast caught a hot mic moment with Rodgers motioning toward the sideline and yelling, “What the F***? Call it!” The cameras then panned over to McCarthy, who appeared to be visibly upset and voicing a profane response to his quarterback’s remarks.
McCarthy has since expressed regret over how he handled that situation.
“Communication sometimes is not the best choice of words, but everybody’s competing on the field,” McCarthy said via ESPN. “I think what’s said on the field, the way I grew up in this game, usually stays on the field. That’s not the case today. I understand that. But any negative communication on my part, I wish I wouldn’t use those words.”
McCarthy’s remarks shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as he doesn’t want that moment to become a center point for distraction. If the Steelers were to snowball into more struggles, it could be a consistent topic of discussion that could lead to internal friction.

At the same time, the focus should be on the team’s offensive performance. The Steelers are sitting at a 2-2 record through the first month of the season with plenty of room for growth offensively.
The connection and relationship between Rodgers and McCarthy will be crucial in helping guide the Steelers toward the playoffs. Pittsburgh is looking to bounce back in Week 5 action at home against the Indianapolis Colts.
