Odds Makers: Jay Gruden Tops List of NFL Coaches on the Hot Seat

According to bookies, Jay Gruden is under pressure in Washington. The Redskins coach needs a quick start to the season.

Several head coaches will open their first season with a new team when the NFL regular season kicks off. Coaches are hired and fired on a regular basis in the NFL. Ahead of the 2019 season, oddsmakers have updated odds on what NFL coach will be the first to go.

Topping that list is Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden. Jay Gruden is at +300 to be the first to be given his walking papers. Gruden is followed by Pat Shurmur at +700. Then, Matt Patricia at +1000, and Dan Quinn and Bill O’Brien each at +1200 to round out the top five.

Gruden took over as head coach in Washington in 2014. Since, he has reached the postseason just once after he directed the team to an NFC East title in 2015. He achieved this with a 9-7 record. Washington lost to Green Bay in the wildcard round that season.

Redskins’ fans are positive about the team’s future with quarterback Dwayne Haskins and running back Derrius Guice the marquee skills players on the roster.

However, if Washington does not jump out of the gate quickly with wins, then Gruden’s job might not last long and that possibility is good since the Redskins have several holes that must be filled for the team to be considered a legitimate contender for the NFC East or a wildcard playoff spot.

Pat Shurmur’s days with the New York Giants could also be numbered as the Giants no longer have talented wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. The Giants drafted their quarterback of the future in Daniel Jones but he is likely to start the season on the bench behind veteran Eli Manning and fans are not convinced Jones was the correct pick.

At 38, Manning is not the quarterback he was when the Giants won a pair of Super Bowls and without a potent offense; Shurmur will be on the hot seat early and could be the first out the door.
