Patrick Mahomes wins second NFL MVP award

Patrick Mahomes claimed the first of what he hopes is many accolades this week, winning his second NFL MVP award.

Patrick Mahomes is on pace for arguably the greatest career an NFL quarterback has ever seen. That continued on Thursday night for the Kansas City Chiefs’ star.

Mahomes, 27, was named NFL MVP for the second time, making it twice in five years as a starter. He won the award in 2018 when he threw for 5.097 yards and 50 touchdowns, leading Kansas City to the first of what is five AFC Championship Games appearances — all at Arrowhead Stadium — and counting.

For context on how tremendous the company is for Mahomes at this early stage of his football life, consider this is the entire list of quarterbacks who have won multiple MVP awards since the award was handed out, starting in 1957:

Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana, Steve Young, Brett Favre, Kurt Warner, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Mahomes.

Outside of Mahomes, the others are either in the Hall of Fame or certain first-ballot entries when they become eligible. And if Mahomes retired tonight, he’d likely join them at some juncture.

This season, Mahomes was somehow the best he’s ever been despite the Chiefs trading away superstar receiver Tyreek Hill during the offseason. Kansas City went 14-3 to earn the AFC’s top seed, while Mahomes threw for 5,250 yards and 41 touchdowns against 12 interceptions.

For his career, Mahomes’ numbers are staggering. He’s 64-16 in the regular season, and 10-3 in the postseason with two of those defeats coming in overtime. Mahomes has thrown for 24,241 yards, averaging 303 yards per game. He’s also tossed 192 touchdowns abasing 49 interceptions.

From an awards standpoint, it gets even wilder. Mahomes is now a two-time MVP, a five-time Pro Bowler, a two-time First-Team All-Pro and a one-time Second-Team All-Pro. He was also named Super Bowl LIV’s Lost Valuable Player, winning his first title with a 31-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

On Sunday, Mahomes will go for his second ring, looking to join an incredibly short list of quarterbacks who have won multiple MVPs and at least two Super Bowls as a starter. The entire list includes Brady, Manning and Montana.

Greatness rarely comes around in such an obvious, overwhelming form. We’re seeing it with Mahomes play out in real time.
