Patriots’ Jacoby Brissett looking forward to QB competition in New England

The New England Patriots potentially drafted their quarterback of the future with the third overall pick in this year’s draft by taking former North Carolina product Drake Maye.

Despite that, Jacoby Brissett is looking forward to the competition for the starting job for the 2024 season.

“That’s all out of my control, so I don’t really worry about that. I’m excited to have him on the team, and the other guys as well that we drafted and picked up. I think it’s going to be good,” Brissett said via ESPN.

“Competition brings out the best in all of us, so I’m excited about that part.”

Maye may be the quarterback that the Patriots envision leading them back toward sustained success, but Brissett isn’t looking to be a push-over option next season and possibly beyond. He has the early upper hand with his vast NFL experience and previously playing with New England.

Brissett will likely get the first crack at the starting job, but the Patriots are looking to develop and nurture their rookie quarterback. New England clearly has huge plans ahead for him, but the team doesn’t want to rush him into the situation if he isn’t ready yet.

Having Brissett gives the Patriots the security blanket while Maye gets acclimated to being an NFL quarterback. The veteran quarterback will also serve a key role as a mentor to the North Carolina product.

There is plenty that will unfold ahead that could see the Patriots’ quarterback battle be the central focus of the offseason.
