Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo suspended for two games

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been suspended for two games next season after violating the league’s performance-enhancing substances policy.

Garoppolo’s punishment stems from his using a prescribed medication without having a valid therapeutic use exemption from the NFL.

The veteran quarterback will not appeal the decision, which will result in him missing the first two games of next season. Garoppolo will enter the second year of his three-year, $72.7 million deal.

The Raiders expected to release Garoppolo before the fifth day of the new league year in March, which would be when he is set to receive an $11.25 million roster bonus.

Meanwhile, he has an $11.25 million base salary guarantee for the 2024 campaign that could potentially be voided due to his suspension.

Garoppolo looks to be heading toward finding a new NFL home, which will likely see him compete for a starting job or step in as a reliable backup option. His struggles with the Raiders have pushed him out of the picture as a stable starter.

The 32-year-old is coming off a rough first year with the Raiders, where he recorded seven touchdown passes to nine interceptions along with 1,205 passing yards, a 65.1 passer rating, and a 77.7 quarterback rating in seven games played.

His inconsistent play and injury struggles led him to lose the starting job. Garoppolo demonstrated a lack of production and reliability in leading the offense.

Las Vegas appears ready to shift in another direction under center either through the draft or free agency.
