Rams coach Sean McVay talks about releasing Todd Gurley

It has been a busy offseason for the Los Angeles Rams. This summer has seen them part ways with many mainstays on their roster.

That includes the tough decision to cut star running back Todd Gurley before the first year of his lucrative contract extension began to kick in. It was a choice that head coach Sean McVay reflected on during his interview on the Dan Patrick Show on Monday, stating that there were plenty of factors that went into the move. “There’s a lot of things that go into tough decisions. What I would say is I just wish him the best in Atlanta. I think they got a good football player. But we’re also excited about seeing is there an opportunity to maybe add somebody in the draft. We ended up taking Darrell Henderson in the third round last year that we think has a lot of upside, and when Malcolm Brown has gotten his opportunities, he’s delivered in a big way in the last few years.”

It was a tough decision for the Rams to make, but it was one that proved to be inevitable. His production was no longer matching up to the massive contract he had received from the team nearly two years ago.

Gurley had struggled to move past a nagging knee injury that saw him fail to record more than 900 rushing yards or a single 100-rushing yard performance last season. All of the signs were pointing to the Rams parting ways with him due to that factor alone.

Los Angeles moves forward with second-year running back Darryl Henderson likely getting the first crack at the starting job.
