Rex Ryan, Ron Rivera among candidates for Jets coaching job

As the New York Jets edge closer to a close to a disappointing 2024 season, the franchise holds the tall task of finding its next head coach.

The search will feature exploring several avenues to bring in the right coach who can move the team in the right direction. Names such as Rex Ryan and Ron Rivera are expected to be among possible candidates to fill the vacancy.

Ryan voiced during an interview with ESPN New York Radio on Monday that he anticipates speaking to the Jets about the head coach position. Meanwhile, New York will interview Rivera on Thursday.

Ryan had a six-year tenure with the Jets that featured two AFC Championship Game trips in his first two seasons. However, New York struggled to find consistency over his final four years, which led to his departure.

He had a 46-50 regular-season record and a 4-2 playoff mark. Ryan previously interviewed for the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator position after Dan Quinn left for the Washington Commanders.

Rivera holds a 102-103-2 record in 13 seasons as an NFL head coach with the Carolina Panthers and Commanders. He was let go by Washington after last season, ending his four-year stint where he held a 26-40-1 record, and one playoff appearance.

The Jets have been busy moving through candidates to fill their open general manager position. It has seen them hold interviews with former Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff, Reese’s Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy, and former Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson.
