Russell Wilson plans to play in Steelers’ preseason finale
As the Pittsburgh Steelers head into the preseason finale against the Detroit Lions on Saturday, quarterback Russell Wilson said he plans to play in the last tuneup before the 2024 campaign.
“We’re playing,” Wilson said via ESPN. “Yeah, we’re all playing. I’m excited to get back on the field. Last week was great to be out there for the first time, putting more pads on and everything else. And obviously we didn’t get the win and everything else, but I think the big thing for us is just executing and us making our plays and doing our thing.”

In his preseason debut against the Buffalo Bills, Wilson completed 8-of-10 passes for 47 yards but failed to lead the Steelers on a scoring drive on any of the five possessions he played.
He didn’t display many limitations from the calf injury that ailed him throughout much of training camp. However, he didn’t demonstrate a strong grasp of the offensive game plan yet.

That makes it necessary for him to garner much-needed playing time in the preseason to help push the Steelers in the right direction. Pittsburgh has demonstrated patience with Wilson, eyeing him as the starter to begin the 2024 season.
Meanwhile, fellow offseason addition Justin Fields struggled against the Bills, completing 11-of-16 passes for 92 yards but only led the Steelers one scoring drive. His performance featured a few miscues on throws down the field, highlighted by an overthrown ball to T.J. Luther that would have been a touchdown.
