Saints coach Sean Payton says Taysom Hill contract is more work than Drew Brees’ deal
The New Orleans Saints headed into this NFL offseason with a lot of uncertainty surrounding the future of the franchise at the quarterback position. Drew Brees appeared to be seriously considering retirement while Teddy Bridgewater is almost certainly headed elsewhere, and Taysom Hill set to hit free agency.
Fortunately for New Orleans, Brees has decided to come back for at least one more season, and it appears Hill might be doing the same rather than looking to cash out as a free agent. However, the process to get a new deal done with Hill is a bit more complicated for the Saints than it was with Brees, according to head coach Sean Payton via Amie Just of Nola.com.
“If he was unsigned prior to the league year, I would anticipate us really paying close attention to that and looking at that first-round tender,” Payton said of Hill. “That’ll take some time, relative to his contract because it’s unique in what he’s doing now and what we feel like he can be and what he can do when Drew does retire. That will probably take a little more work than the contract that Mickey does with Drew.”
Regardless of how complicated the situation gets with Hill, the versatile quarterback has expressed a strong desire to return to New Orleans and play behind Brees next season. He doesn’t appear to be in a rush to leave the Saints and may be thinking about taking over once Brees does eventually walk away from the game.
As for now, the process is ongoing, but it seems inevitable that Hill will return when it is all said and done.
