Saints star Michael Thomas continues holdout during training camp
There are several notable players in the NFL that are looking for lucrative contract extensions this offseason.
Among those is New Orleans Saints star wide receiver Michael Thomas, who has made it clear from early on in the process that he wants to hammer out a record-breaking deal with the Saints. This plan of action has now led to Thomas deciding not to report to practice, according to Mike Triplett of ESPN.
Wide receiver Michael Thomas has not yet reported to New Orleans Saints training camp as the two sides continue to negotiate a long-term contract extension.
Saints veterans reported to camp Thursday, with the first practice scheduled for Friday.
Thomas has stayed firm on his stance as his camp has voiced that they want him to become the highest-paid wide receiver in league history, with his next contract having an annual salary above $20 million. However, the Saints have only been able to go as far as $18-$19 million in contract talks between both sides.
There is a strong desire to get a new extension worked out as Thomas has proven to be a huge cog in the Saints’ offensive game plan as their No. 1 option in the passing game. He has established himself as one of the top wide receivers in the league that is only hitting the prime of his career with potentially his best year ahead of him.
All of this may simply just work itself out in the coming weeks ahead of the start of the 2019 season.
