Saints will start Trevor Siemian at QB versus Buccaneers

The New Orleans Saints are coming off an impressive Week 8 win edging out the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

However, the victory came at a massive cost as starting quarterback Jameis Winston suffered a season-ending torn ACL and MCL damage. With Winston out, it put the Saints in the challenging position of deciding their direction under center for Week 9 against action against the Atlanta Falcons.

As the matchup nears closer, New Orleans has chosen to go with backup Trevor Siemian as the starter. (h/t Pro Football Talk)

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, New Orleans is expected to start Trevor Siemian on Sunday via ESPN.

It doesn’t come as much of a surprise as Siemian performed well in place of Winston last Sunday, completing 16-of-29 passes for 159 yards with a touchdown. However, he did fumble once, but he recovered it.

The Saints will likely go with the week-by-week approach with Siemian as the team also has Taysom Hill back in the fold. He returned to practice this week, giving the team another option under center.

Hill has some starting experience, as he filled in for Drew Brees last season. The Saints will also rely on their running game to lead the charge behind their running back duo of Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram.

Kamara remains the offensive focal point as he’s putting together another strong all-around campaign, posting 480 rushing yards and two touchdowns along with 28 receptions for 256 receiving yards and four touchdowns.
