Sean Payton ‘absolutely’ interested in Texans head coaching job

The Houston Texans are moving toward finding their next head coach after letting go of Lovie Smith.

The search could quickly ramp up with Sean Payton sitting there as the primary target. Payton recently stated during an interview on FS1’s “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd that he would “absolutely” be interested in the opening.

“When you practice for three days with an opponent, you get a chance to meet a lot of the different personalities and people involved in the building,” said Payton via ESPN. “They’ve got really good draft capital, really good draft capital. They’re in a division that you can at least say with Indy, Tennessee, and Jacksonville [is winnable].

“There’s growth potential immediately there from their two or three wins they had this year.”

The Texans are coming off a disappointing season finishing with a 3-13-1 record. Although, the team holds the second overall pick. Houston sits in a prime position to add one of the top quarterbacks such as Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Alabama’s Bryce Young, or Kentucky’s Will Levis.

The franchise will also hold plenty of financial flexibility heading into the upcoming offseason with a projected $39.6 million in salary-cap space. Payton could immediately come into the position to mold the roster to his preference, especially at the quarterback position through the 2023 draft.

The wrinkle in the situation will be the New Orleans Saints still holding his rights due to having three years left on his five-year contract. Reports have emerged that the Saints want at least a first-round pick compensation in any trade for Payton.
